Why Every Veterinary Clinic Needs a Social Media Content Calendar (and How to Make One)

Updated: 3 days ago

Running social media for a veterinary practice can be overwhelming. That’s why I want to share one of the most powerful tools I used while managing content for a busy hospital: a content calendar.

💡 Pro tip: This post includes a sneak peek lesson from my course, Veterinary Social Media Foundations, which is exclusively available to Vet Social Hub members.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how I use social media content calendars to plan content stress-free.

Why Every Vet Practice Needs a Content Calendar

If you’re still winging it when it comes to social media posts or relying on Meta Business Suite alone to store your social media posts, then you’re setting yourself up for burnout and frustration.

A content calendar gives you:

  • A dedicated place to store all your post ideas

  • A central hub for your graphics, captions, and videos

  • A reliable backup when scheduling tools glitch (because Meta will betray you eventually 😅)

Using a content calendar outside of your scheduler protects your hard work and gives you clarity over your content strategy.

What Is a Content Calendar?

Think of it as a master blueprint for your social media. You use it to:

  • Plan out what you’re posting and when

  • Store captions, hashtags, and media all in one place

  • Look back on previous months to reuse or remix strong-performing content

  • Brain-dump ideas and drag them onto your posting schedule later

I personally love using Airtable for this (you’ll get my exact template linked below 👇), but Google Sheets, Excel, or even paper planners work great too.

The Role of Content Buckets (aka Content Pillars)

To avoid decision paralysis when staring at a blank calendar, use Content Buckets. These are the core categories of content your clinic should rotate through.

The 4 Core Content Buckets for Veterinary Social Media:

Bucket Type

Description

Educational

Tips, facts, and advice to empower pet parents and build trust

Personal

Behind-the-scenes, team intros, and clinic values to humanize your brand

Connection

Fun, engaging posts (like emoji games or pet polls) that build community

Promotional

Services and offers that solve real problems for clients and their pets

You can also add optional buckets like Inspirational or Entertaining, depending on your clinic’s personality.

How Buckets Guide Your Monthly Planning

Assign a bucket to each day you plan to post.

For example:

  • Monday → Educational

  • Wednesday → Personal

  • Friday → Promotional

  • Saturday → Connection

This structure ensures variety and keeps your content engaging, purposeful, and easy to plan.
